Bring the Outside In with These 4 Nature-Inspired Furniture Trends

Discover a One-of-a-Kind Home Collection at Our Kansas City Furniture Store

More and more, we’re seeing a focus on indoor-outdoor living. And I’m 100% here for it! I love architecture that creates a seamless transition between the home and natural world. I’m seeing fresh takes on kitchens, dining rooms, lounge spaces, and more, bringing what’s traditionally inside out.

On the flip side of that, there are just as many ways to invite the outside in. From fabric choices to color combinations, simple changes can boost your connection with the great outdoors. Here are four furniture trends I love that pay homage to your surrounding landscape.

Furniture Trend 1: Flower Power

Floral and botanical fabrics are one of the easiest ways to celebrate the beauty of the outdoors. They’re a direct reflection of nature and instantly infuse a space with freshness. Not destined just for throw pillows, use these patterns to adorn windows, upholster accent furniture, or even to design the perfect summer bedroom.

I know what you’re thinking, “Don’t all floral and botanical fabrics take a page straight from the ‘70s?” And sure, the trend might have made its appearance on your grandmother’s sofa, but florals were popular long before that and still are now. Today’s designs can be bold and bright, soft and subtle, or anywhere in between. By incorporating them simply into your space, you can create an atmosphere that’s both modern and nature-inspired.

Furniture Trend 2: Indoor/Outdoor Performance Fabrics

Performance fabrics’ durability and versatility make them some of my favorite textiles for custom upholstery. Those that are engineered for indoors and outdoors are more resistant to staining, pilling, tearing, fading, and other common damages from everyday use. Families with kids and pets are big fans of our performance fabric selection for just this reason!

The furniture trend has evolved over the years, and performance fabrics also deliver on comfort. Many people think of indoor-outdoor textiles as being stiff and scratchy, but those days are long gone. Modern options are soft and easily move with the furniture.

Performance fabrics are also ideal for creating cohesion from inside out (or outside in). By integrating them in both spaces, you contribute to a more unified indoor-outdoor experience.

Furniture Trend 3: Exposed Wood Frames

Exposed wood frames have always been among the most popular furniture styles and provide tasteful opportunities to tie into the beauty that’s outside your home’s four walls. With a wide range of finishes – from white oak to deep mahogany – you can let your personal style shine while still nodding to Mother Nature.

You don’t have to go for a matchy-match look, either – we’ve talked in the past about how mixing and matching wood tones add depth to a design. In the past, mixing woods may have been seen as taboo, but more homeowners are adopting the furniture trend of blending dark and light stains throughout their spaces. Just like with color, woods can complement one another without being exactly the same. Bonus: it helps you add more points of visual interest to a room as well!

Whatever pieces of furniture you choose – a bed frame with elegant posts or an accent chair with exposed arms and legs – wood brings unique texture and warmth to any space.

Furniture Trend 4: Down-to-Earth Hues

Whoever said brown was boring just didn’t know how to make the most of a rich and earthy aesthetic! This and other natural colors, like deep forest greens and dusty pinks reminiscent of sunset, seem to be popping up everywhere you look these days.

And they’ve found their way into furniture trends, too. Our linen-blend Fawn Tan fabric is colored and patterned like the gorgeous coat of a young deer and the perfect subtle touch to window treatments, light-duty upholstery, throw pillows, and more. On the other hand, our statement-making Gameshow Emerald features a print of flying ducks and pheasants perched on a dark green velvet backdrop – certainly an eye-catching addition for a sophisticated and luxurious space.

Whatever your color palette, start with hues that are rooted in nature. Earth tones bring instant coziness to a room and give it a more lived-in, homey feel. Not to mention, using these colors as a foundation allows you to play with more vibrant decorative elements later on.
