Beating the Post-Holiday Décor Slump

We did it! We survived 2020 and a very (for a lack of better word) unique holiday season. Since we were spending most of our holiday time at home this year, I pulled out all the stops to make it feel as normal as possible. However, now it seems that the post-holiday décor slump is even more pronounced in my home. By “post-holiday décor slump” I mean that the mantels that once boasted full garland now look bare and the corner of my living room that featured a magnificent tree, a bit empty. The lack of Christmas cheer is leaving me in a bit of a funk. We run into the same dilemma in the shop – where do we even start with bringing life back into our spaces after such a full and magical time of year?

2020: A Decor Year in Review

What a year it has been! In some ways it feels like 2020 has lasted for a lifetime, and in others it seems like it never got a chance to start in the first place. It has been a year that taught us to be flexible in the face of change and one that proved how amazing all of our friends and customers are for continuing to support us here at the shop. It is because of you that we are able to keep our doors open and keep doing what we love! As we look forward to a new year (come on 2021 – we have high hopes for you!) it is important to look back at the good memories we have collected these last 12 months. In that spirit, I have revisited some of my favorite articles from this past year that represent this eventful period of time. I hope you enjoy taking a look back with me!

Internet Aesthetics: Cottagecore and Cluttercore

New Traditional design is always adapting and growing to include inspiration from like-minded design movements in order to stay a stimulating and timeless style choice, and I for one love to look at all the new visions that are coming into the spotlight! Gen Zs and Millennials are taking to their social platforms to create new image combinations that create a visual feast and a surprisingly specific design viewpoint.

Leave Them on Read: A Few Favorite Books to Enjoy and Display

There are few things I enjoy more than curling up in a soft throw with a cup of hot tea and a good book, in fact I think about doing that all the time! Yet somehow life always seems to get in the way. Despite my lack of time to snuggle up with new titles, my love for reading and my admiration for beautiful books continues to grow. I find that it is easier for me to flip through coffee table books and short reads that encompass my interests rather than the daunting task of starting a new novel. There are gorgeous books that are made to browse and discover again and again whenever your schedule allows

The New Tradition of Grandmillennial Style

I believe that what you love is always “in style” and if you curate your aesthetic around colors, patterns, and objects that draw you in, your home will be timeless and feel just right no matter how the times change. That is why my love of New Traditional design, sometimes considered the “anti-trend” style, has been so fulfilling. Mixing vintage with modern, the bold with the beautiful, and the maximalism with even more maximalism creates a beautiful space full of personality. So, image my surprise when over the last few months, I have seen a boom on social media for the New Traditional aesthetic, all thanks to a “new” design movement called Grandmillennial Style. It truly re-energizes me that a style I love has gotten a revival and I hope that Grandmillenial Style outlives it’s “trend cycle” for today’s younger generation just as New Traditional has endured for me!

Fabulous While Zooming: Creating the Perfect Video Call Backdrop

A couple weeks ago I received a phone call from one of our lovely customers who had come across a new home décor challenge for us. She (like many of us during the time of COVID) has been utilizing video services like Zoom and FaceTime more than ever, and in doing so discovered her desire for a better background. This begs the question – what makes the perfect video chat background?

Red, White and Blue

With summer quickly approaching, it is time to break out the Uncle Sam hats, fireworks (sorry pups!) and our finest patriotic décor. While I love a red, white and blue palette, the colors are especially meaningful when we fly our flags on Memorial Day and Independence Day. While the color trio certainly pays homage to America, it is also a fresh and timeless color palette and that’s something that this design enthusiast can also certainly appreciate (and celebrate!). There are ways to incorporate these colors into your home, from a casual pop to full-on RWB-mania as summer progresses.

Light Up Your Home: Pretty Pendants, Stunning Chandeliers, and Lovely Lanterns

There are countless ways to bring your style and aesthetic into your home, but perhaps none as important as the essential and ever-needed light fixture. Overhead lighting can be overlooked, especially when there are so many fabulous lamps we can use to spice up a room and countless other must-have home accessories available to dress up a space! However, the impact that good lighting can have on a space is worth the time and effort it takes to find just the right piece.

Home Office: Make Working from Home Work for You

I’ve found that not only is it important for me to have a functional space, but also one that reflects my creativity and style and keeps me inspired. Since we’re also in the middle of a move (yes, let’s throw that into the mix, shall we?) and I’m still getting my perfect little work-at-home space together, I am fortunate enough to have seen some beautiful examples by Nell Hill’s clients and designers that have provided a wealth of inspiration!
