The Nidhi Collection

Happy Monday! This past weekend we invited you into the shop for our Summer Open House and had a blast! Thanks to all who stopped by! Next Friday, on May 9 from 10 -2, we’re excited to welcome Myriam Totta of Raising Gardens for a pop-up. She’ll have basil plants available and is excited to share her most insightful gardening tips as we enter peak gardening season!

On another note, I am thrilled to share our latest collection– the Nidhi Collection. This collection is extra special because (not only can you shop it online later this week – stay tuned,) but it also carries a story that is close to our hearts.

If you follow us on social media you may have seen that Zoe, Carlie, and I embarked on an unforgettable journey to India. I have always been fascinated by the rich history, vibrant culture, and exquisite craftsmanship of India.  We were warmly welcomed by the hospitable people of India and inspired every step of the way. The city of Delhi, with its historical landmarks and bustling markets, was a treasure trove of eye-opening experiences.

One of the highlights of our trip was meeting Nidhi, the talented artisan and textile entrepreneur behind the beautiful block print fabrics in our newest collection. We first met Nidhi at an industry market last year and were instantly captivated by her stunning block print and embroidered fabrics and trims. During our visit to India, Nidhi graciously invited us to her office and home, where we had the privilege of witnessing her production process firsthand. She even prepared a traditional homemade Indian dinner for us, making our experience even more memorable (and delicious).

The Nidhi Collection

The Nidhi Collection features a range of pillows, bedding, and fabrics that are perfect for all the things you know and love from Nell Hill’s. From window treatments to upholstery, these fabrics are versatile and full of the artistic charm found in things made by hand. We have also incorporated the Birds & Cherries fabric in Indigo into this collection, which is the only fabric that is not hand blocked. This addition showcases how different textiles can mix beautifully, creating a sophisticated look that goes beyond the block print.

Let’s dive into our fabulous block prints next! Let’s start with the Naja Aqua and Mystic Sky fabrics – they both feature intricately detailed block printed stripes on a crisp white base. These pair perfectly with the rest of the block prints in the collection, adding a bit of structure to the otherwise organic motifs. We created a duvet, made by hand in our workroom, featuring Mystic Sky that is currently featured on the second floor of the shop – it’s nearly impossible to resist jumping right in!

The Nidhi Fabric collection features both traditional and more contemporary motifs.  Artichoke Charm, Pankh Ocean, and Quivera Bloom are simply darling. The cheerful greens and blues dance across crisp white base cloths – you can almost see the artisans at work as you look over each yard or browse the pillows tucked into shelving and styled into beds in the shop.

To complete the collection, we have our Botanical Jewel, Gladioli Garden, Dabu Blossom, and Ogee Vermillion fabrics. These patterns are denser, leaving less white space from the background visible, and feature florals, plants, and paisley – elements often found in traditional block printed fabrics.

Did I mention that we also have a gorgeous green trim that’s part of this collection? From adding it to the bottom of a sofa to a bedskirt to a racing stripe running down a pillow, it’s a versatile addition to the collection!

The Art of Block Print

One of the most remarkable aspects of the Nidhi Collection is the hand block printing technique used to create these fabrics. Hand block printing is a traditional method where trained artisans meticulously carve designs onto wooden blocks and then use these blocks to print patterns onto fabric. I dig a little deeper into the art form in this previous post.  This process results in unique designs that add character and charm to each yard. Unlike screened prints, hand block prints have a distinct look and feel that cannot be replicated by other printing processes.

I love this collection so much – each fabric is fantastic on its own, but the story they tell when mixed together is so much more than a few pieces of fabric. To me, this collection is  tradition, history, culture, and friendship all rolled into one and it was an absolute joy seeing it come to life.

I encourage everyone to explore the beauty of the Nidhi Collection, whether you’re a long-time lover of block prints or a new fan. The story and talent behind these fabrics are truly something to appreciate. Keep an eye out on your inbox, as you’ll soon be able to shop this collection online (for the first time ever!) and bring a piece of this beautiful collection into your home. I hope you find as much joy in these fabrics as we do! Until next time – Happy Decorating!
