What does the process of creating custom soft goods from the Nell Hill’s workroom look like?
At Nell Hill’s, the journey of your custom order through our workroom is a meticulously orchestrated process, ensuring that each piece receives the utmost care and attention to detail. It all begins when you step though our doors (or give us a call), where our designers, bedding team, or fabric department guide you through the selection process, helping you choose the perfect fabrics and designs to bring your vision to life.
Once your order is placed, it’s sent to the fabric department to gather all the necessary materials. Cut yardage is ordered and in-stock yardage is cut. From there, materials make their way to our bustling workroom, where our skilled team of artisans await. With a focus on efficiency and precision, our workroom operates like a well-oiled machine, ensuring that each item is handled with care and expertise.
Every piece is treated with the same level of craftsmanship, regardless of size or complexity. Our seven dedicated artisans work tirelessly to bring your order to fruition, following a first-in, first-out approach to maintain efficiency. Each fabric is measured and hand-cut, meticulously prepped, and expertly assembled to ensure a flawless finished product.
Once your custom piece is complete, it’s sent back to the shop for pickup (or set aside to await your furniture delivery), ready to adorn your home. Our commitment to quality and craftsmanship shines through in every item we create, with lead times reduced to 6-8 weeks to ensure a timely delivery without compromising on excellence.

You’ve heard me say it before but I think it bears repeating, at Nell Hill’s we believe that what you love is always in style. When it comes to duvets, the possibilities are endless. Frame your duvet with tape trims for a polished and refined finish, or opt for a decorative ruffle or flat flange with a pleated or mitered corner to add texture and visual interest. Our duvets are designed with buttonholes and fabric-covered buttons of your choice (match them to blend, contrast them to add visual interest), providing both functionality and style (but zippers are always available as well!). Plus, each duvet comes with ties to attach to the insert and an extra button sewn inside for added convenience.
For pillows, we offer a plethora of detailing options to suit your taste. Whether you prefer a classic ruffle or intricate tape trims, standard cording or a micro welt with flat flange (my personal favorite), we have the perfect embellishment to elevate your pillows to new heights. Cushions can be made larger or small, for furniture indoor and out, window seats, banquettes and more, from the foam widths and fabrics of your choosing. Additionally, they’re putting their expertise to use repairing a duvet that fell victim to a mischievous pup’s playful chewing. As summer approaches, preparations are underway to stock the shop with a fresh array of duvets and pillows, all handcrafted in the workroom.
Beyond these daily tasks, the artisans are also diving into some intricate customer needlepoint projects, transforming each masterpiece into a stunning pillow front with meticulous care. And with new additions on the horizon, such as the charming 16-inch round pillow gathered with a button in the center we’ve affectionally named “The Lydia” after its creator, customers can look forward to even more one-of-a-kind creations from the talented team at Nell Hill’s.
