Inside the Nell Hill’s Workroom
Just down the street from the shop, inside our warehouse, is one of the most extraordinary parts of Nell Hill’s: our in-house workroom. It’s where nearly all of the in-stock shams, duvets, and cushions you see on the floor are made, and where so many custom projects come to life.
Walk through the door and you’ll hear the hum of sewing machines, see stacks of fabric waiting to be transformed, and feel the energy of a team that genuinely loves what they do. This is the place where ideas become tangible and where imagination turns into something you can hold.
A Team United by Craft
The workroom is led by Lil, our Workroom Manager – a true powerhouse of creativity and leadership. She’s always coming up with fresh ideas, clever details, and thoughtful touches that elevate every project. She guides the team with confidence, clarity, and a contagious enthusiasm that sets the tone for the entire space.
Her team is a remarkable blend of women who bring different experiences, strengths, and stories to the table. Some offer youthful perspective paired with fresh eyes and fearless creativity. Others have had entire careers – from working in the Social Security offices to nursing, HR, and even the Railroad – and now pour their passion for sewing into this craft. They come from different backgrounds, but they share a deep love for making beautiful things and genuine joy in working together.
Where Ideas Take Shape
At Nell Hill’s, creativity moves organically and collaboratively between the Textiles Department and the workroom. The Textiles team curate fabrics that spark ideas and the Workroom team interpret those ideas through craft, imagining how each piece can be constructed, finished, and made extraordinary.
It’s not a linear process; it’s a shared one. Materials inspire concepts. Concepts inspire craftsmanship. And somewhere in the middle, something beautiful emerges – a pillow, a duvet, a cushion, or a custom piece that feels entirely its own.
The partnership between the teams is reflective of the quality and excellence of our pieces and why our textiles feel layered, intentional, and one-of-a-kind.
What Happens Inside the Workroom
Inside the workroom, creativity and craftsmanship meet in the most tangible way. Walking through the space you’ll see patterns being matched with meticulous care, trims being hand-applied, custom fills being made with the perfect loft, embroidery machines stitching, fabrics being cut, shaped, and sewn into something beautiful.
And at the center of it all is Nellie, our beloved 15-needle embroidery machine. She’s been with Nell Hill’s since 2007 and has stitched countless monograms, names, and custom designs – a quintessential workroom team member!
Custom Work, Crafted In-House
Custom orders begin in the Textiles Department, where customers choose fabrics, trims, and details. Once those selections are made, the workroom takes over, crafting each piece with thoughtful construction, beautiful finishing, and a level of care you can feel the moment you pick it up.
Whether it’s a pair of pillows, a duvet, window treatments, or something completely unique, the process is collaborative, approachable, and tailored to each customer’s needs.
