Fresh Color Combinations for Summer: Advice from Our Furniture Store Design Consultants

Bask in the Shades of Summer with Help from Nell Hill’s in Kansas City

The flowers are blooming, bees are buzzing, birds are singing their sweet songs, and temperatures keep climbing – summer is nearly here! I love this time of year and all the striking colors that come with it.

More hues are popping up around the shop too, and our design consultants are having fun playing with fresh colors in new and exciting ways. From bold splashes of color to soft and natural tones, we have everything you need to create the perfect summer palette – whatever your style.

To get you inspired and thinking about warmer days ahead, my team and I sat down to chat about our favorite color combinations for the season.

Classic Blue and White

A blue and white scheme has been an enduring new traditional favorite, and is a perfect fit for summer. With a cobalt or navy hue, you can turn your lakehouse vision into reality and create a relaxing space that isn’t shy when it comes to style.

Reflect the lake outside your door by incorporating its colors in custom upholstered furniture and home decor. Use accents of white to keep everything light and bright. A deep blue without a contrasting color can make a room appear too heavy and dark this time of year.

Right now, our design consultants are obsessed with classic bold blue and white stripes for a preppy nautical look. You can even add hints of red if you really want to amp up the theme.

Lush Greens

These days, monochromatic color palettes are all the rage. And for good reason! I love seeing different shades of a single color integrated throughout a design, creating a consistent and cohesive space. Varying shades have just as much power as contrasting and complementary hues.

Greens bring in summer’s lush landscape. A soft sage evokes fresh herbs from the garden, while deeper tones nod to the trees surrounding your summer cabin.

Not only are shades of green great choices for summr, but they’re also being seen as new staples in interior designers’ swatch books. No wonder our design consultants can’t get enough of them!

Beach House Vibes

You don’t have to live on the beach to design a beach-inspired summer space. Taupes, beiges, and soft blues remind us of sand between our toes and ocean water lapping at our feet, without looking overly coastal. The peaceful color scheme makes for a light and airy space, and is there anything more summery than that?

These lighter hues also have a way of opening up a room. If you have a smaller space, a color combination like this one can help it appear larger than it actually is.

Our design consultants recommend pairing a beachy color scheme with natural materials, like wicker or rattan, to add to a warm and inviting atmosphere you’ll never want to leave.

Neutrals with Pops of Yellow

When you think of summer, where does your mind go? Sunshine? Firing up the grill? Lightning bugs? We’re willing to bet it includes the color yellow.

Our design consultants agree that you can embrace the cheery hue inside your home, too. Keep in mind that too much yellow can quickly become overpowering. There are a myriad of ways to incorporate it decoratively, though – pillows, bedding, artwork, drapes, and much more. Just make sure to pair it with some neutrals to strike a good balance.
