Easy Summer Entertaining to Kick Off the Season

With Memorial Day right around the corner and the unofficial start of summer arriving with it, this time of year always puts us in the mood for easy entertaining. Even though summer has been in the shop for a few weeks now (retail moves fast!), the shift toward bright colors, relaxed gatherings, and simple hosting feels especially welcome as we head into the long weekend.

Today’s post is inspired by a setup in the shop that leans into a classic mix of red, white, and blue — not in a themed way, but in a way that feels fresh, summery, and perfect for this earlyseason stretch. Its a reminder that a few thoughtful touches are all you need to make hosting feel relaxed and effortless, whether youre planning a full gathering or just setting out a few things for a casual afternoon on the porch.

A Fresh Color Story

Summer entertaining doesn’t need to be complicated. A simple palette; soft blues, crisp whites, and a few cheerful pops of red, instantly feels seasonal without leaning too literal. It’s a combination that works all the way from Memorial Day through Labor Day, and it pairs beautifully with woven textures and natural materials.

Plates, napkins, and serveware in these colors do most of the work for you. Even the smallest details, like a patterned bowl or a playful accent tucked into a place setting, add personality and make everything feel pulled together with little effort.

Let Texture Do the Heavy Lifting

One of my favorite ways to elevate summer entertaining is by layering in texture. Woven chargers, rattan baskets, wicker vases, and natural fibers bring in just the right amount of charm. They also make everything feel a bit more relaxed which is exactly the mood we want this time of year.

Baskets are especially helpful. Use them to hold napkins or silverware, corral bread or chips, or even as a small wastebasket. They’re practical, but they also add that effortless, collected look we love.

Create a SelfServe Bar

A small selfserve bar instantly elevates even the most casual gathering. Set out a stack of glasses, something bubbly, and a bowl of fruit or herbs, and let guests mix and pour as they please. It keeps the mood light and gives the whole space that easy, summerevening feel.

Throw a pretty platter under items on the bar, a sweet vase with a flower tucked into the corner, a patterned bowl with some limes, and a pitcher of your favorite drink and you’re good to go!

Gather Florals and Greenery

Greenery and florals add life to any setup. They don’t have to be elaborate — even one generous vase or a few small stems scattered around the table is enough to make everything feel fresh. We often reach for blue and white chinoiserie pieces in the shop, no matter the time of year. They’re timeless, crisp, and work especially beautifully with summer greens and florals.

Keep It Unfussy

The best summer entertaining is simple. Small touches like a knotted napkin, a stack of colorful plates, or a few votives scattered around your space add personality without requiring much effort. Whether you’re hosting a crowd or keeping it small, thoughtful details go a long way.
