Back to College: Bedding and Pillows

Thinking back to my younger years at university I remember a lot of different emotions. That first time away from home is an eye-opener! One of the hardest parts is leaving the comforts of home and branching out to discover your own way. I remember thinking I’d spent 18 years curating my childhood room and now I had to leave it behind! Making a dorm room or rental bedroom feel like your own space is not always an easy task. With rarely an option to add paint colors or even your own furnishings to a space, it can be challenging to make it truly feel like home. My suggested solution? Fabulous fabrics and bedding, of course!

If you have followed along with me over the last couple years, you know that one of my absolute favorite colors is green. I find myself drawn to this lovely hue year-round and in all its brilliant forms. From restful soft shades to bright pops that bring energy and life to a space, there is always an appropriate spot for a green accent. As we developed our new paint line colors, I knew I wanted to add another green to join the iconic Mary Carol Hedgeapple hue that is so beloved. After trying to sneak at least five lovely green tints into the line because I couldn’t pick a favorite, Meadow emerged.

When it comes to pillows, I can never get enough! Much to my husbands’ displeasure (he secretly loves them I know it!) you can find textiles of all shapes and colors in almost every room in my home. One of the details that gives a pillow its unique and tailored appearance is the trim. There are many kinds of trim and techniques so it can be hard to know what you want when it comes to fitting your pillows into your home aesthetic and design – it’s different trims for different whims! To get started into the world of trimmings, I’ve collected a few of my favorite edgings that I mix and match throughout my home to share with you!

Embracing Color in Your Home

These last few weeks have left me feeling a bit blah. The grey skies and single-digit temperatures have me feeling sluggish and drained, and I’m in need of a change! What better way to add some pep to my step and some energy to my day than with a shot of color? Anyone who follows our blog or has visited our shop knows that we love pattern and color in all rooms great and small. I know not everyone is able to come enjoy the shop right now and I want to bring my winter blues solution right to your doorsteps (or desktops, rather). Though the days may be dreary and cold, that is no reason you or your home should be! This week I am talking tips for embracing color and bringing some much-needed energy to our homes and ourselves.

As cold weather approaches (and then leaves again and comes back…thanks Midwest!) it is really getting me excited about the upcoming season, and I don’t mean the holiday season! Sure, this time of year, it is most common to be fantasizing of dancing gumdrops, snow-covered trees and the cheery old man in red coming to leave presents, but I’m dreaming of – you guessed it – PLAID. Yes, it is finally what I like to refer to as “plaid season”!

When creating our Nell Hill’s paint line, I wanted to create colors that I would want in my favorite rooms: rooms that are both lovely and lived in, comfortable and friendly, on trend and yet timeless. Our new palette of seventeen colors has endless combinations that are perfect for enhancing a home’s unique style. The first color I would like to highlight is a versatile and enduring hue – Flint Hills.

Last weekend our Autumn accessories were flying off the shelf and it was so much fun chatting with everyone who came in to check them out! I love hearing about your fall home décor plans and talking about this beautiful season. Along the way, I am always surprised by some of the perceived “rules” that seem to pop up surrounding specific times of the year. A common misconception when gearing up for Autumn is that you are limited to a certain color palette in order to be seasonally appropriate. Untrue! While this time of year I do enjoy more spiced hues and muddy tones to match the changes we see outside, there are many ways to bring a more seasonally appropriate approach to your home regardless of color palette. I’ve gathered a few different fabric groupings that range in tone from classic fall feels to crisp autumn evening to show that it’s easy to pivot into a new season with a little textile fun!

The New Tradition of Grandmillennial Style

I believe that what you love is always “in style” and if you curate your aesthetic around colors, patterns, and objects that draw you in, your home will be timeless and feel just right no matter how the times change. That is why my love of New Traditional design, sometimes considered the “anti-trend” style, has been so fulfilling. Mixing vintage with modern, the bold with the beautiful, and the maximalism with even more maximalism creates a beautiful space full of personality. So, image my surprise when over the last few months, I have seen a boom on social media for the New Traditional aesthetic, all thanks to a “new” design movement called Grandmillennial Style. It truly re-energizes me that a style I love has gotten a revival and I hope that Grandmillenial Style outlives it’s “trend cycle” for today’s younger generation just as New Traditional has endured for me!
