Fall Color Stories

As we settle into fall in the shop, the color stories this season are starting to shine. A few weeks ago we shared a recap of our Fall Open House, and today we’re taking a closer look at the palettes and pairings that are inspiring us right now. Fall at Nell Hill’s has never been limited to one look. It’s a season that can lean crisp and neutral, rich and moody, bright and joyful, or even classic blue and white. Walking through the shop, you’ll see all of those directions represented, and if you’ve been thinking about refreshing a room for the season, it’s a wonderful time to visit.

Our upholstered furniture sale is happening now, with 20% off custom and in‑stock upholstery through September 15, and our wood furniture sale will take place September 15 through the 30th. That being said, the shop is fully stocked for the season with fabulous pieces so let’s take a look at the color stories inspiring us most right now!

Crisp Neutrals and Browns

This palette is all about warmth and texture. Soft oatmeal upholstery, creamy neutrals, and layered browns create a calm foundation that works beautifully for fall. The pillows add just enough pattern to keep things interesting. And yes, the tulip chairs have become a fast favorite. They’re sweet, sculptural, and surprisingly versatile.

Camden w/ Self Cord

Moody Greens and Deep Browns

If you’re drawn to richer tones, this part of the shop is full of inspiration. The spin on the classic leather chesterfield anchors the space in a rich oxblood, paired with dramatic green velvet chairs that have incredible movement and texture. The bullion fringe along the base adds a touch of personality without feeling fussy. Pillows Camden w/ Self Cord  and Game Show Emerald w/ Red Cord bring in color and tie the whole palette together. It’s a look that feels timeless and cozy.

Deep Blues and Browns

Blue continues to be one of our most-loved colors, and it transitions beautifully into fall. The deep blue velvet sofa is styled with pillows in Schumacher's Chiang Mai fabric. While these exact pillows have been purchased, we can make them for you, or you can shop a similar look in our Dragon Dynasty fabric. It's a pattern that seems to work beautifully in every season. Browns, warm woods, and pops of color keep the palette grounded, making this a great example of how blue can feel both classic and fresh.

Blue and White for Fall

Blue and white may not be the first thing that comes to mind for fall, but if you know us, you won’t be surprised. It’s a combination that never goes out of style! In this corner of the shop, blue and white is paired with dark woods, oatmeals, and even small touches of red, brown, and navy. It proves that blue and white can live comfortably in any season. On the sofa, Floral Gala w/ Greige Cord pillows and on the chair, Santa Monica Indigo w/ Navy Cord pillows, help pull the palette together.

Bright Pops of Orange and Red

For those who love a cheerful fall look, this palette is full of energy. Neutral upholstery becomes the perfect backdrop for pillows in bold oranges, reds, and multicolor patterns. It’s a playful way to bring fall into your home without committing to a full room of color. Pattern mixing is key here, and our workroom has created so many combinations that feel both lively and balanced. A coordinating ceramic helps to carry the more colorful tones throughout the space.

Maroon, Deep Red, and Purple

This palette leans into the deeper side of fall. The plum chair paired with the floral, box-pleated ottoman shows how cool grays, warm pinks, blues, and neutrals can all work together. The larger-scale floral fabric has just enough color to feel seasonal without being limiting. It’s a great option if you want something that feels fall-forward but still soft, and will work with your space year-round.

Shop featured pillows:

Grassmarket Check Beige w/ Flange

Blues and Lighter Browns

This color story is calm, layered, and easy to live with. Blue and light brown is one of those combinations that feels collected and timeless. In this vignette, plaid upholstery, warm woods, curated artwork, and blue-and-white ceramics all work together for spaces that feel elegant yet relaxed and ready for comfortable living. It’s a palette that can carry you through fall and well beyond.
